There is a ribbon, a bit frayed along the edges over all the years, that has been woven through my family. It connects us all with names. Nathan John. Andrew Jesse. David Christian. Emily Rebecca.
I see this ribbon most often during the holidays, when the six of us gather by the Christmas tree amidst Christmas carols. But sometimes I see its satiny shimmer out of the corner of my eye as I tenatively approach the German potato salad at family cookouts.
